Developing First Nations-Validated “Engagement Protocol” to Guide Indigenous Community Engagement with Mining Sector

MLi3 has undertaken several strategic exercises to guide corporate engagement with indigenous communities over the years. Currently, MLi3 is working with the First Nations Mining Economic Development Corporation to collaborate with selected First Nations wanting to build a made-in-Manitoba protocol for mining companies to engage with Indigenous communities. If fully validated by the governance structures of the different self-selected Indigenous communities, this could be the first tool of this type in Canada. The exercise is being mindful of the many “Consultation Protocols” that have been developed by other jurisdictions in Canada to support liaison and engagement among communities, governments, and mining corporations.
